Preparing for an MRI

MRI is a safe and painless method. A few simple steps will help your scan go smoothly and on time.

How to prepare

  • Most scans need no special preparation — you can eat and drink as usual.
  • For an abdominal MRI, do not eat for 4–6 hours before the scan.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early to fill in the questionnaire.
  • Remove all metal objects before the scan: jewellery, watch, hairpins, belt.

Contraindications

Before the scan you confirm that you have no pacemaker, hearing implants or ferromagnetic fragments in your body.

Pacemaker

A pacemaker or another electronic implant is a contraindication for MRI.

Metal implants

Hearing implants, ferromagnetic fragments, metal hardware — please tell us about them when booking.

Pregnancy

Tell the doctor if you are pregnant. In the first trimester MRI is done only when strictly indicated.

Claustrophobia

Let us know in advance if you fear enclosed spaces — we will offer sedation.

Sedation

Sedation is available for children and for patients with claustrophobia or severe pain, so the scan goes calmly.

Contrast

Contrast agent is only given when prescribed by a doctor.

What to bring

  • Passport or another ID document
  • Doctor's referral (if you have one)
  • Previous scan results: reports, discs
  • Medical records related to your condition
