Start with the question your scan should answer
Choosing an MRI center starts with the examination you need, not just its price. Brain MRI, vascular imaging, a particular spinal region and a joint examination are different studies. If you have a referral, share its wording when booking. If the intended area is unclear, discuss it with your doctor first: scanning everything “just in case” cannot replace a clinical assessment.
For a follow-up examination, bring previous reports and the images themselves. They allow the radiologist to compare changes rather than assess the new scan in isolation.
Discuss safety and practical needs before your visit
MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than X-rays. This does not mean everyone can be scanned without screening. Tell the team about pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, surgery and possible pregnancy. Bring documentation for any implant: eligibility depends on the specific model and its conditions of use.
If pain makes it hard to lie still or you fear enclosed spaces, explain this in advance. Ask about access to the premises if you need help with mobility. These questions are best settled before scanning starts.
Compare the total cost and arrangements for results
Confirm the exact examination, whether contrast is required and which additional services are charged separately. Contrast is not needed for every MRI; its use depends on the clinical question. Ask how you will receive the images and report, when they will be ready and how to provide previous examinations. Discuss the report with your treating doctor, who can relate the findings to your symptoms and examination.
